Barb VanDoorn of Lake Holcombe is winner of a major national Award for Teaching Excellence

Lake Holcombe school counselor Barb VanDoorn is the winner of a prestigious California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence, the NEA Foundation announced Monday. She will receive the award at the NEA Foundation’s Salute to Excellence in Education Gala next February in Washington, D.C. “Barb explains it is the job of educators to identify the strengths and needs of each student, and believes the counselor’s role is to take it one step further — advocating for each student in the classroom, the community, and in realizing each student’s future goals,” said WEAC President Ron Martin, who nominated her for the national award.

Four outstanding individuals honored with WEAC Awards

WEAC President Ron Martin presented four major WEAC Awards at the 2017 WEAC Representative Assembly. The winners are: Maggie Beeber, Friend of Education; Sharon Bowen, Richard J. Lewandowski Award for Humanitarian Service; John Linneman, Education Support Professional Award; and Miguel Salas, Cunningham, Dickinson, Watson Staff Award.

Clintonville’s Karen Petermann is a Phy Ed Teacher of the Year

Clintonville teacher Karen Petermann, a WEAC Region 3 member, has been named the Midwest Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year by SHAPE – the Society of Health and Physical Educators. Karen, who has been at Longfellow Elementary School for more than 30 years, told WBAY TV, Channel 2, Green Bay, that she believes in guiding students to being active “not only now but forever in their lifetime.”
